SONAM: Karma, Merit, & Privilege

How does the Bodhisattva see their own privilege? For this session I hope to open a conversation exploring how systemic privilege impacts our journey into the Dharma. To do this I will draw from my personal study of six paramitas, karma, and merit to unpack misunderstandings about privilege that hinder our capacity for meaningful engagement with society.

Karma Lödrö Gyendon is a Buddhist monk living in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Originally from South Florida, Gyendon studied fine art at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon before beginning his spiritual path with Buddhism. Gyendon has studied and trained at Sravasti Abbey under the guidance of Venerable Thubten Chodron, and, since 2014, at Gampo Abbey under the guidance of Acharya Pema Chödrön.
